Breast Density

Don't just be concerned about Breast Cancer when it's Breast Cancer Month. Do be aware when it's that time of the month and talk to other women about it. Unfortunately, there are still millions of women out there that do not know about it. They don’t know enough about what to do, how to prevent or detect it. Educate yourself and others.

If your doctor tells you that the tissue in your breast are dense, you need to not only have a regular mammogram done, but you need to ask your doctor about having a sonogram done as well. It forms as a second opinion. The only sure way to tell if one's breasts are dense is to have a mammogram done. Most women don’t know that their breast are dense. And if they do, they don’t know enough about it to ask for a sonogram. It’s not just for pregnant women. On mammograms, dense tissue is light, like tumors, so it can hide the cancers.

It is suggested that a woman go in for a sonogram if the breast tissue is dense. This procedure makes it much better and clear to the eye if there's anything there. Most doctors won't tell you this, so just ask. If you don't see it in the mammogram, and you have that dense tissue, demand that you get a sonogram. Because the sonogram uses sound waves and not radiation, it's completely safe. In addition, a sonogram can offer details X-rays (mammograms) can't. Women with dense breast tissue are at higher risk of breast cancer.

Second, it doesn't matter if you don't have breast cancer history in your family. It can happen and that's that. Go to the doctor and check your breast. I have a friend who said to me that she never went to get them checked. She's 38 years old. God bless that stupid child. Lord only knows if something's wrong. On top of that, she hasn't been to the GYN for over 2 years. She says she doesn't need to go.

WOMEN!! YOU NEED TO CHECK YOURSELF!! Go every six months or once a year. Check your breast in the shower and go to the doctor and let him or her check it. It's important. You're only hurting yourself if you don't. Something could be developing without any symptoms and you would have no idea.

A sonogram isn't just for women, either. It can also be used to help treat prostate and other cancers in men. So men, get your babies checked out too. Don't be afraid. Be afraid of NOT going instead.

....just had to get that off my breast. ;)

Glad to hear you doing both. It's really important and while I've been talking about it this past month with several women, I found out that they didn't know certain things. My mother is a B C survivor, so it's important to me and important for me to tell others.

Keep checking. It doesn't hurt. :)

yes, this is really important! I DJed a Breat Cancer Awareness event last fall. It was well attended and they had some interesting information presented as well as cool artwork done by survivors and their families.

That's cool, Tomdog. I like the music.
Nowadays, more than 30 years ago, more women are aware of it, but there are still some women, believe it or not, that don't have a clue. It was quite shocking to find this out.

Common Breast Cancer Myths

The first myth pertaining to this disease is that it only affects women.

Second myth that is associated with this disease is that if one has found a lump during an examination, it is cancer.

Third is that it is solely hereditary

The next myth associated with breast cancer is downright ridiculous. Would you believe, that in this day and age, some individuals still think that breast cancer is contagious?

Conversely, some individuals foolishly believe that breast size determines whether or not one gets cancer.

Finally, another myth that is associated with this disease is that it only affects older people. This is not so. Although the chance of getting breast cancer increases with age, women as young as 18 have been diagnosed with the disease.
